The Saola Pseudoryx nghetinhensis (Mammalia; Bovidae) is IUCN Critically Endangered, but its ecology remains almost entirely unknown. Here we present the first characterization of Saola habitat use. We assessed Saola macrohabitat and microhabitat characteristics using Saola sighting location data obtained from local people. Saola prefers life in dense forests that have good supply of running water (near the riverbanks). Although not much is known about saola, it is listed as critically endangered species due to accelerated habitat loss and hunt. Horns of saola are collected as a trophy while other parts of its body serve as ingredients in folk medicine.
Although the partnership, coordinated by the Saola Working Group (SWG), has made significant advances in the protection of saola habitat in the Annamite mountain range on the border of Vietnam and Laos, commercial poaching remains rampant, leaving the saola teetering on the edge of extinction.
Habitat and Range The saola is only known from the slopes of the Annamite Mountains, a restricted mountainous jungle on the northwest-southeast border between Vietnam and the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos). The added pressure from rapid and large-scale infrastructure in the region is also fragmenting saola habitat.
